While the team had no problem hitting the ball, earning an overall .270 batting average, their slugging percentage was 27th in the league and were just three spots away from last place in runs. The legend clashed with Don Mattingly and was let go from the Marlins’ organization at the end of 2016.
Lenny Harris, Third Base Coach – Manager Don Mattingly inherited Lenny Harris when he took over the Marlins. He began his career with the Marlins as assistant hitting coach and then moved over to third base. Harris was let go following the end of the 2016 season.
Reid Cornelius, Bullpen Coach – Cornelius rounds out the trio of releases that the Marlins’ made at the end of 2016. Reid played for the Florida Marlins and took over as bullpen coach in 2010. Castillo spent the better part of 2016 with the Jupiter Hammerheads, where he posted a 2.07 ERA and a 2.46 FIP. There, he posted a strikeout to walk ration of 5-1, allowing just 18 walks in 117.2 innings pitched. He was moved up to Double-A at the end of the season and is expected to start 2017 there, although many expect him to quickly move up to Triple-A and possibly get called up to the Majors if he can stay healthy. Castillo was named Pitcher of the Year in the Florida State League in 2016.
Jarlin Garcia – Garcia spent a big chunk of 2016 injured after being called up for one game in May. The 23-year old leftie was optioned back to the Double-A after suffering a triceps injury. Once he returned to health, he performed adequately in the Arizona Fall League but was on a pitch count. Garcia throws some nice heat with a 95 mph fastball, but his changeup is nearly nonexistent and far too obvious. The Marlins are hoping that once he works on drawing more power from his whole body rather than just from his arm, he’ll be more effective. Garcia has a career 4.38 ERA since being drafted by the Marlins.
Brian Anderson – Anderson is a versatile defensive player that the Marlins are looking to for some power hitting. He was promoted to Double-A at the beginning of May 2016 and is expected to continue to move up through the minors and make it to the big leagues in mid to late 2017. Anderson was drafted for his batting power but has yet to show any consistency at the plate. If he can convert his raw power to in-game consistency and continues to bring versatility to the defensive play, he should help the Marlins add depth to an already talented infield.
